On June 28, 2018, Governor Jerry Brown signed the California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018 (Assembly Bill 375) into law. The State of California Department of Justice states, “[t]he California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), enacted in 2018, creates new consumer rights relating to the access to, deletion of, and sharing of personal information that is collected by businesses.”
The CCPA was enacted on June 28, 2018, with amendments following. The law was effective on January 1, 2020. Regulations were initially issued on October 11, 2019, with revisions released on February 10 and March 11; final regulations were released on August 14, 2020. The new law has broad reaching applicability beyond the state of California and it may impact financial institutions in any state.
